Derby Politics

I just love the Soweto Derby, like acclaimed horseracing events such as The J&B Met in Cape Town and the Vodacom Durban July, the derby is the only soccer event that has the power to draw such a high order of anticipation from people who aren’t exactly inclined to being soccer lovers.

Stars Of The Last Derby

Minnie Dlamini, “the star of the last derby,” rumoured to be caughted by South Africa’s favourite, Itumeleng Khune. This young lady rode that PR wave to the max, she went as far as wearing Khune with her childhood friend Aurelia Nxumalo, of course this had Shwashwi and us bloggers  typing,

It was all PR, real celebrities do it all the time by dating within the A list group, infact Minnie’s colleague Bonang Matheba was also rumoured to be whispering too many sweet nothings in the direction of Simphiwe Tshabalala.

The other star of the last derby has to be the childhood friend Aureila, I quote myself from my article from  an article on 031’s Hottest titled “Before The Debbie,” I said

Aurelia is like Minnie’s tightest not-all-that-celebrity friend, but she’s climbing ‘em social circles quickly too.

How right I was, the lady known as Miss A or simply @Aurelia_N on Twitter, rose to the limelight following a controversy with popular house DJ, Euphonik. It was alleged that the Durban-born model was carrying the child of Euphonik – of course it turned out this was infact a load of bull, just another tacky Sunday World story that almost crushed the reputation of Aurelia forever.

Aurelia continues to do her modelling thing in Johannesburg, rubbing shoulders with Uyanda Mbuli (she dresses Minnie) and the likes.

MINISTER

Halala Makhosi

Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula was present at the last derby, he was found in the executive seats at Soccer City sharing laughs with other dignitaries, but sitting very close to him, were Kaizer Chiefs personal, the Team Manager Bobby Motaung, and Jessica Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Manager.

Yes, the Sports Minister is indeed an adorned Kaizer Chiefs groupie, he couldn’t hide away that million dollar smile when Siphiwe Tshabalala smashed home the third goal in a comprehensive 3 0 demolition in the Telkom Knockout Final at Soccer City.

Expect a ground breaking deal to be sealed between the Motaungs and the Sports Department if Chiefs win tomorrow.

ON THE PITCH

Sthembiso Ngcobo became a Kaizer Chiefs favourite in the TKO Soweto Derby Cup Final.

The two goals he scored against Orlando Pirates were the juustification thousands of Chiefs were always looking for when he made the shock move to Naturena from Free State Stars at the beginning of the season.

I’ve seen Ngcobo waste a dozen chances for Chiefs after that cup final, Chiefs fans are more forgiving to you as a player if you have put Pirates to the sword. That whole thing about how fans quickly forget, na ah, not true, not with the Chiefs fans.

for Pirates, the last persons to score against Chiefs were Oturugo in the 3 – 1 loss and Katlego Mashego when Pirates beat Chiefs 1 – 0 in the semi final of the MTN8.

Mashego simply hates the team in Black and Yellow, he’s been known to play his best game when against Chiefs in the past, with Pirates threatening players such as Klate, Segolela and Mayambela missing through injury or suspension, Mashego will have to show that his hirrendous substitute performance in the last derby was just a minor blip.

ADDED PRESSURE

The Other Guys!

With Ajax Cape Town now at the top of the ABSA Premiership, the result of the derby becomes really interesting. Ajax defeated Free State Stars 1 – 0 tonight, that means they are the top and looking quite a challenge with 46 points with an inform attack that includes Thulani Serero, Terror Fanteni and Brent Carelse suppporting.

A draw for Pirates will see the Happy People bounce back to the top of the league.

Chiefs have it all to do, a draw will open up a 2 point gap between Pirates and Ajax. It’s getting late in the seson, the best place to be at, is right at the top.

Who will win the derby?
